El seu pare, Josep Serrat, era un anarquista català afiliat a la CNT, i la seva mare, Ángeles Teresa, mestressa de casa, era filla de Belchite (Saragossa). La seva infantesa i el seu carrer el marquen profundament, i és per això que un gran nombre de les seves cançons narren la geografia de la Catalunya de la postguerra. La Carmeta, La tieta i El drapaire, entre d?altres cançons, descriuen personatges típics del seu barri.
